Instructions for Sending in a Plant Sample for Identification

If you have found a new population of a nonnative aquatic plant of concern, a sample should be collected so the Department of Environmental Conservation, Water Quality Division can confirm its identification.

  1. Obtain the entire plant (if possible), including stems, leaves, and flowers, if they are present.
  2. Wrap the sample in a wet paper towel as aquatic plants tend to dry out rather quickly.
  3. Place the sample in a plastic baggie.
  4. Make note of the date, collection location and some details about the site where the aquatic plant was found.
  5. Mail the sample as soon as possible to the Department at the address below:
